*******************************************************Welcome to our updated (4/2612) 2011 - 2012 web site
As of March 15, our 2011-2012 competitive Sailing Season ended. We are still sailing - without competitive pressure.
The Kings Point Model Yacht Club (KPMYC) is a seasonal club which sails from Mid-November through Mid-April at Kings Point, a gated condominium retirement community of 7200 units located in West Delray Beach, Florida. We sail the Soling 1-Meter Radio Controlled Model Yacht. The majority of our members are Snowbirds. Only nine of our members are Florida residents. Among those nine, several leave for the summer for periods of time varying from three to almost six months.
Ten years ago during the 2002-2003 winter season, we started this club with four boats . Three of those boats and their Captains are still sailing with us. The fourth boat was recently sold to a Snowbird who divides his time between Annapolis, MD and Pompano Beach, FL. He has joined our Club so our original four boats are still competing on our lake.
During the 2008 - 2009 season, we affiliated our Club with the AMYA. We are in Region 3, Club # 280.
The Main Entrance to Kings Point, the Atlantic Avenue entrance (above), is the closest entrance to our lake. This entrance is located on the South side of W. Atlantic Avenue at the first traffic light about 800 feet West of Jog Road in West Delray Beach. We have the best lake in our area on which to sail and we set out a challenging course. Our dues are a modest $20.00 for the season.
Due to size, storage considerations, cost, and the strong wind on our lake during the Winter, we decided on the Soling 1-meter as being our "ideal" boat. This choice kept everyone's expenses relatively low and the One Design designation means that our boats are (relatively) equal.
Approximately 33% of our members are residents of our Community. The others live outside of Kings Point. We welcome interested Captains from within Kings Point as well as those who live in the surrounding communities.
Last season (2010-2011) we had twenty-two paid members. Forty-two guests attended our Annual Awards and Farewell Dinner in March (2011).
In January, 2012, the last three of our Snowbird members returned and paid their Dues. In addition we signed up five new members. This season we have twenty-seven paid members. This is our highest membership to date. We now usually have 12+ boats on race days which means we have been sailing heats (split fleets). As late as April 11, we had eleven boats sailing.
We held our 2011-2012 Annual Awards and Farewell Dinner on March 15 at Athena Mediterranean Restaurant in Lake Worth. The first several of our Snowbird members have already left. The first one returned North on March 27.
In the past we had an "A" and a "B" fleet and presented awards to the top three Captains in each fleet. For the 2011-2012 season we have eliminated the "A" and "B" designations. At the end of the 2011-2012 season we will present awards to the top three Captains as well as to the two Captains who have shown the greatest improvement over their previous year's scores..
During the 2010 - 2011 sailing season Irv Halper, our Secretary Treasurer, wrote Bylaws for our Club. After discussions via email AND during Friday Windling, the Members agreed on a final version. The Bylaws were submitted to the Membership via email. In the absence of objections, the Bylaws have been adopted and remain in force until changed per the process described in the Bylaws..
The Bylaws, in PDF format, are available at the bottom of this page under Attachments.
We also added three sections of OPERATIONAL RULES under ADDENDA TO THE BYLAWS. The ADDENDA are also available under Attachments at the bottom of this page.
The Club sails every Wednesday and every Sunday at 1:00, weather permitting, from mid-November through late March into mid-April.
On Friday we go Windling from 9:30 A.M. until whenever. Windling is informal sailing from chairs and is when we help each other and try to teach our Newbies how to sail better. Lunch and a cooler with something to drink is highly recommended.
When we have twelve or more boats, we split the fleet and sail pairs of heats with Odd and Even heats on the water at the same time.
Our competitive season provides approximately thirty (+/-) sailing/scoring days. This season we completed 36 scoring days. The lake is always open and available for practice.
In order for a race day to be "official" we require a minimum of five boats starting. An "official" scoring day requires we complete seven races.
To sweeten the day's racing we try to, and usually do, sail an additional two races for "throw-outs". For each two races over seven, we throw out each Captain 's two worst finishes. Some of us stay at the lake beyond our racing for score and just sail the course for fun and practice.
At the end of the sailing season, in order for a Captain to be eligible for First, Second, or Third place Awards OR a "Most Improved" Award, he/she must have completed a minimum of fifteen scoring days. Only a Captain's best fifteen finishes are considered. Therefore, the more sailing days a Captain completes, the better his chances to lower his season's score. In case you did not know, in our sport, as in Golf, lowest score wins.
I mentioned that we are a seasonal Club. A number of our members come down for a short season (January-March) during the coldest weather in the North East. They want to be with their families during the December and March-April Holidays. Even so, they have ample opportunity to complete the required fifteen official scoring days.
The 2011-2012 Sailing Season started on November 13. Even before the return of all of the Snowbirds, we had between seven and nine boats competing. Our "high" so far was 19 boats sailing on January 18. Since the start of January, we were averaging fourteen to eighteen boats on race days.
On April 13, 2012, our winter sailing season buoys were pulled from the lake. They will be cleaned, refurbished, repainted, and stored awaiting the start of the 2012-2013 Sailing Season. With the departure of our remaining Snowbirds and traveling residents fast approaching, by mid to late May, we will go into "Summer" mode. Our sailing will be reduced from three days per week to one day which will be Windling at 9:30 A.M. on Friday
As we pulled the "Winter" buoys, we put Roger's "Summer" buoys in. All of the buoys are now held onto their anchor/counterweight lines with aluminum caribiners, a Roger improvement. Those that we had in the water for the just ended season held up with no deterioration at all. The aluminum is clean and the springs all work.
Visit us - especially during the winter "season". Stop by and watch us sail, then try one of our boats. You might be inspired to join us.
It generally takes about two hours for us to complete our nine races or eighteen heats. You are invited to join us to observe and give us a hand. We usually could use someone who is not racing to record the finishes. Once the day's races have ended, please try one of our boats. You cannot damage them and we'll be there to help you.
You are also invited to visit us on Friday morning to find out more about our Hobby and sail one of our boats.
REMINDER:
In order for our pages to display properly, you should make your browser window as wide as possible. If you do not do this the page is reformatted to fit a narrow window and the images do not display properly.
You should see the next three images side-by-side on one "line" under their titles. If you don't, click/drag your browser window in order to widen it so the three photos appear in a row, one next to another - all three side-by-side.
