Three of our members, Art Holtzman, Ben Rusi, and Al Stall are making and/or supplying several useful and attractive parts for the Soling. They are NOT making these parts as a business venture. Rather, they are making them available as a convenience/courtesy to their fellow Soling 1-Meter Captains.
Al's daughter-in-law, Marilyn, is manufacturing Transmitter Rain Covers and soft, customizable sail carriers.
AVAILABLE ARE:
Aluminum mast cranes by Art
NO SLIP Mast Jack, gooseneck/vang, and other items by Ben
One Piece Spruce Masts made by Al. These are Aircraft Grade Spruce: The BEST! They are shaped, drilled, slotted, sanded.
Rain Cover for the Transmitter by Al's daughter-in-law, Marilyn
Soft Sail Bags also by Al's Daughter-in-Law.
Art is making mast cranes out of aluminum. His cranes are attractive and add a distinct element of "class" at the top of the mast. The relief holes he drills remove material and weight without sacrificing strength. The aluminum is slightly thicker than the Victor-supplied brass but it is harder, less likely to bend AND Art's crane weighs less than the Victor crane.
The cranes, priced at $10.00 each (and well worth it) are available from Art at the lake. You can also reach Art via email at upwind120@gmail.com .
Even a small weight savings at the top of the mast translates into lowering the CG of the boat.

Al is making one-piece masts out of Aircraft Grade Spruce. Spruce is a straight-grained wood. It is lighter than Maple or Oak. You want your mast to be straight, strong, and light.
The problem with the two-piece mast that Victor includes with the kit is the scarf joint. No matter how carefully you make the two-piece mast, because of the scarf joint and adhesive, the density of the mast at, and on either side of the joint, is affected. I like to stain and varnish my masts. To my eye, a one-piece mast looks better. I would say it is also more uniform throughout its length.
Unlike the Victor mast which requires the builder to drill out the mask jack screw hole, drill a hole in the mast for the spreaders and drill holes for the jack wire cotter pins. Al drills these holes, cuts the slot of the mast crane AND sands the mast for the buyer. All that is needed on one of his masts is to stain/varnish or paint. OR, of you want, you can sand some more then finish the mast.
Al's mast costs $35.00. If you cannot pick it up at the lake, you have to add postage and handling. For an additional $10.00, Al will put a couple of coats of polyurethane on it for you.
You can see Al at the lake or you can contact him via email at: alstall@comcast.net
